Dauphin Island Shoreline Restoration Projects
Current Status
September 16, 2011
Some months ago, the Town of Dauphin Island presented a proposal to
President Obama - the $60 million proposal for Dauphin Island shoreline
restoration drafted by Dr. Scott Douglass and presented to the Town of
Dauphin Island back in April of this year.
Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) are
co-sponsoring the "RESTORE" act, which will provide funding (maybe a
billion or more for the five Gulf states) for ecological and economic
restoration. The funding will come from BP as a fine for the
aftermath of the oil spill of April 2010.
The Department of Justice will determine the amount of the fine, which
will then determine the amount that will go to the Gulf states. It
is our undestanding that the bill will be approved in committee within
the next week, and then go to the Senate floor for a vote.
The committee is chaired by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and she approves of the
RESTORE act. Congressman Jo Bonner (R-AL) reportedly had some
problems with the bill initially, but we hear that he is on board now.
